Design Concept: “Wheat Melody”

The Serbia National Pavilion at the 2025 China International import Expo celebrates the timeless cultural and agricultural bond between Serbia and China through a poetic concept titled “Wheat Melody.”

The pavilion intertwines architecture, sensory design, and digital interaction to create a multi-sensory narrative about identity, nature, and shared traditions — connecting taste, sound, and collective craftsmanship.

The architectural language draws inspiration from the ancient Serbian “Sojenica” house, a vernacular dwelling with elevated floors used for safety and food storage — a typology also found in traditional Chinese wooden architecture. This connection becomes a metaphorical bridge between the two nations.

The pavilion’s rammed-earth façade, elevated above a layer of real wheat, symbolizes Serbia’s agricultural heritage and its most essential ingredient — the golden grain. Beneath the structure, wheat fields blend with glowing tubes in natural tones, evoking both earth and light. The exterior setback forms a “coffee porch” — a welcoming threshold where visitors pause, observe, and reflect, embodying the Serbian spirit of hospitality.

Spatial Experience

Visitors first encounter a transitional corridor, where the rammed-earth wall runs parallel to a six-meter-high rope installation in the vivid colors of the Expo 2027 Belgrade identity, themed “Play for Humanity.”

The corridor operates as a symbolic passage — half museum, half playground — featuring window displays embedded within the façade that project archival footage of Serbian games, festivals, and folklore, offering glimpses of the “Play” theme that Serbia will present at the upcoming Expo 2027.

The atmosphere gradually shifts: from a dimly lit, intimate introduction into a bright, open central hall — a contrast between earth and light, enclosure and openness.

Interior: “Taste Your Destination”

At the heart of the pavilion stands the interactive tasting station “Taste Your Destination”, designed as a sculptural centerpiece combining soil, steel, and wheat. The installation resembles both a bar and altar, crowned with polished metal tubes that descend like inverted stalks of wheat. Hidden speakers within the structure emit gentle soundscapes of Serbian folk music, creating an immersive environment that appeals to both emotion and curiosity.

Visitors engage with touchscreen displays integrated into the counter, discovering their personalized “Serbian Profile” — a playful digital journey blending psychology, geography, and gastronomy. Each profile reveals a story: where one might live in Serbia, what food, music, and lifestyle best match their character. This interactive layer — developed in collaboration with Serbian cultural institutions and powered by DeTao’s group digital systems — seamlessly merges spatial design with experiential branding.

Participants receive a printed souvenir card summarizing their profile, which they can present at the open kitchen station to sample a taste corresponding to their result — a symbolic and literal taste of Serbia.

Materiality and Aesthetics

The rammed-earth surface references Serbia’s rural craftsmanship, while woven rope walls and hanging fabric panels reinterpret traditional Serbian weaving and Chinese knotting in a contemporary, architectural language.

At one of the pavilion’s entrances, students from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts (SIVA) collaborated with Serbian artists to co-create a series of woven artworks integrated into the rope wall installation. This collaborative gesture became a living metaphor for the pavilion’s ethos — a fusion of two cultures expressing collective creativity and shared human spirit, symbolizing how art and design can unite nations through tactile and emotional experience.

Inside, materials such as brass, mesh, and natural grains convey warmth and authenticity, while maintaining a refined modern tone. The integration of sound, texture, and aroma transforms the pavilion into a “living installation” — a dialogue between agriculture, architecture, and emotion. The interplay of light and shadow, created by suspended fabric strips and softly glowing metal fixtures, enhances the atmosphere of motion and play.

A Pavilion of Play, Taste, and Humanity

The “Wheat Melody” pavilion stands as both an architectural statement and cultural gesture — an invitation to engage with Serbia through the senses. It translates the theme of Expo 2027 Belgrade, “Play for Humanity,” into tangible form: play as creativity, as connection, and as the essence of being human.

By blending traditional materials with interactive technology, the pavilion offers a new model for national representation — one where architecture becomes a social performance, inviting visitors not only to observe, but to taste, listen, and participate.
